Alternator upgrade

Post by Relics »

Hi, I am wondering if there is an alternator upgrade as I want to install an amp and more powerful stereo on my 1988 Voyager. Thanks for any advice.

There is a outfit that redoes Alt. From 35 amps to 55amps. There is a add or a posting somewhere on the web pages. I am sure somebody knows of it.
lockwoodjohn, Good luck... Enjoy your bike!

If you go with the 55 amp alt. it has to spin faster to charge.
I think it's over 2000 rpm not sure.
So if you do a lot of city or slow riding it could be a problem.

My advise would be to install a good voltmeter on the bike first, and also read up on battery basics. A fully charged battery at all times puts less of a load on the charging system. Once you have a voltmeter installed you can see the change in the load on the system. Many a automobile had just a 35 amp alt.
The voltmeter was the first thing I added to my bike and has been a good investment. I never see a voltage lower than 13.3 unless I am pulling the trailer and have the tape deck on with high volume and under 3k rpm. Now come the off season , where the bike will not be ridden for a month or so , I remove the battery and before installing it, check the gravity and charge it to 100% before putting it back in service. Newer sealed batteries are a different story, they have to be charged to 100% based on no-load voltage to charge voltage/time schedule. As shown in the paperwork sold with the battery. But the voltmeter is the ticket in my opinion, it lets you know your limit and even how the regulator is working. Say your bike has set for 3 to 4 weeks, you get out on the road and will see a high voltage of 14.2 , that's because the regulator see's the battery is low and goes into full field. as your riding and the battery is now charging back up the voltage will start to fall back to around 13.3 V .
Any how maybe check out some new speakers to improve the sound of the radio, myself; well I just like to hear the sound of the wind and mostly the engine humming down the road.

...Correct again Gene !, ....having a voltmeter on da bike makes you aware of what's hap'n at all times ! not just "day to day" ....but long term , of logging thoughts of what you see on the volt meter each day .....as the months roll by. Having installed the adapter for the battery tender, back in the fall of 2013,at which time a new "ol school " battery was installed,I have NOT had a reason to remove the faux tank for any reason(it's a XII :perfect10: ) started noticing a steady decline in volt meter readings lately ! time to have a look and see what this is about ? Well, many, many months of perfect Kawasaki reliability/performance....without any kind of "failure" turned out to be something as simple as LOW electrolyte level in da battery(one cell was REALLY low) I filled the 6 battery cells up to the correct level ...and numbers went right back to normal on the volt meter read out . . I think back of how many long rides and trips we have been on with the XII.......and THIS is the only thing ,besides a blown license plate bulb, and broken speedo cable, that the reliable XII has FORCED me to address, makes this my favorite bike I have ever owned ! :LvStrk . long story long... it was the volt meter that I installed some time ago... that allowed me to keep a " EYE " on what's happnin' and make things right ! Now entering the snow months....the XII is gonna have TOP priority for inspection/repair this time ...as other bikes got all attention last winter..................................Tony :-D
