Forktube plug removal

Post by ffltstn »

Bike's way over due for a fork oil change. Bike is on center stand and blocks (my jack has a slow leak). Have drained the oil and removed the snap ring.
Is there a trick to getting the plug to come out of the tube?
I have tried lifting the front wheel with a board under it but am afraid of rocking the bike off the stand.
Should I let the bike down on the jack? Replace drain screws and add air?
Thanks,
Ken

You need to push the plug down and remove the snap ring holding it in.
The link I posted shows it well

Once the inner circlip has been removed, the o-ring of the cap sometimes causes the result you are dealing with. Try rapidly tapping on the cap with a brass/steel drift and a small hammer. Think of it as imitating a riveting hammer type of motion/action with the loosely held and lightly tapped drift. No need for great whacks, just steady, moderate, tapping, and the force of the spring should pop the cap out.
I know it sounds crazy but it has worked for me.

Did your loosen the upper fork clamp pinch bolt. Sometimes someone may have tightened the pinch bolt to tight and it will hold the plug from popping out.

As I posted the snap ring is out and the other post does not show the plug coming out. I tapped it once I'll give it a couple more tries and then loosen the bolts.
Thanks.

UPDATE, A few taps and they popped right out.
There are progressive springs in there already!
Do I need to worry about replacing the o-ring on the plug?

With the forks off use the 160mm from top.
With this method you will have both forks exactly the same.
I use a hand vacuum pump with a steel tube and a stop on it at 160mm' slightly over fill then suck the oil down until it pulls air.
