key switch / blues

Post by ekap1200 »

Well, even with the plastic ties removed, the dreaded ( key switch/harness ) finally got me.
Now this did take 97,825 miles to bite me , and it could not have been a nicer place to be able to
trouble shoot and repair. Smack dab in the middle of the driveway. Saturday was balmy but my son
was here early to ride. He with his new to him V-4 Yamaha. Nice smooth engine it is. Back to the story
my bike stalled on me at a stop sign, on Saturday , and I thought if it then, so Sunday I turned hard left and right before
going to the store. And bingo there it was, Hard to believe only a few minutes to get the 2 allen head bolts out , but a bit
longer to get the plug un-done. 3 wires failed the wiggle test once out and on the bench so I just replaced them all.
All good , for another 100,000 or close to it , anyway. And I did get to clean the plugs on the left side while it was
opened up. Talk about luck, after all those miles up to Lake George and the miles I put-on up there. May just pull the
run/control switch and harness out in the off month of riding and redo that one. No surprise's this next season,
is what I would like to see, along with new brake lines from my good friend Don M.
I am so ready for the twisty roads of W.Virginia .

I found that someone had already patched 2 wires on my ignition switch harness before I bought my '99 in 2009 with only 22,000 miles on it! :hmm:
I had patched 1 more, but had a failure as I was making a hard right backing it in to a parking space near home.Straightening the bars,it ran okay to get home,so I repatched the failed wire then during the next winter service, rewired the ignition switch harness.

my bike just turned 40k and I've had my run-ins with the handlebar harness as well. My ties have been removed when since I first read about the issue here, a few years back. Mine were mostly centered around the cruise control components. broken wires and pulled harness couplers. Cross my fingers, so far nothing outside of one of the handlebar switch housings and I've always been able to get home one way or another.
