winter work

Post by ekap1200 »

Hello to all . I am amazed to say I saw a bike out yesterday around 5 pm..... Even if I had forgotten to top off the fuel you would have not seen me out. I am getting the chills just thinking about it,,, And this guy was at the gas pumps up here in a NJ / WAWA. with no windshield :cold:
I was hoping not to have a long list of items to go over or replace this winter but my list keeps getting longer. Having a hose go out at the rally and seeing Kevin and Holly having not one but two major issues on trips led me to go over a bit more.
my records shown at 47,000 to have replaced wheel bearing so at 100 K they are on the list and ordered today from partzilla along with a few oil/flts and the 3 X 90 mm o-rings. And sure enough the front/brgs /while not shot do feel in need of RPL. Partzilla did not have them on stock and I hope they are still available in OEM. When I replaced them at 47 k they were not from Kawasaki and only lasted 3,500 miles. New tires had arrived and you can smell that new rubber in the shop. Caliper rebuild was a snap , I got real lucky on that failure up in Mass this fall. I was surprised to see the cup in such good shape and it bleed out nicely with the Mighty/Vac. Not a leak to be found but the usual few drips from the final drive onto the bottom of the housing. So not a bad list , and not as long as I thought it would be. I will end up with more time cleaning and waxing it up than working on items. See ya'll in the spring...

Hey Gene, lower radiator hose is leaking on the bagger and that is it. I am changing over to irridium spark plugs on both bikes. After that copius amounts of wax and buffing. On another note I picked up a 87 and 95 parts bikes for free last weekend and the 95 is already disassembled. According to Deb they where suppose to keep me occupied when I retire in May. Oh well so much for that. Also I am picking up an '03 in a few weeks. I hope its a runner I don't need another parts bike. I have another idea for a project but my escapade trailer and "77 Suzuki GT500 need to be completed first. Both should be done by March.

What brand is the tires? Got to order new ones for mine. The ones on it are like new. But way to old to ride on. Guessing the old guy put new tires on. And then was not able to ride much.

I have had mine up on the lift with the wheels off and new tires just sitting here waiting to be mounted. Thanks Loren... We will try to make it to the rally this year, but it depends on the hospital bills that will shortly be sent to us. Sunday was the first day I was up and on my two feet without falling down at some point.. Today I ventured out and had the AVON'S mounted. Front brg's rpl is up next and this bike can be ready for spring. Heart doctor is next up this afternoon and hope he says I am ready for spring.....
Going into work ; for the first time this year ; tomorrow morning.
Hope to see ya'll this summer, if not I will be riding up solo to the fall ride in.

Hello -tnpete , So tell us , what brand tires did you decide on ? I can't say enough about these AVON'S , if you have a dealer that is good to you have him fill out the warranty info . I read that avon gives a 15,000 mile warranty . What that covers is not known to me as I just get them either on line or from a friend that owns a custom bike shop. Once I switched over I could not believe the miles I have gone on them. When I put the old tires out to the curb, they are gone by the time I come home from work. I could get 20k on a set if I had to.
Thyroid med's are finally making changes to how I feel and have been out in the shop working on the 1200. Feels good to be back up and on my feet with hands dirty and parts being RPL,ed . Got the rear tire on last night after an hour of getting it balanced , what a pain, but a spin balance would be an hour drive up to the only dealer that has the right cone's to mount it to the spin balance machine. I have always done it myself and have no regrets other the the time it takes to do it. But that hour is not continuous , spine it-walk away- mark and repeat, then make an educated guess on weight and repeat. It has worked for me and I always got 14 to 19 thous miles on tires. 14 was the best I could do with E3's...
Front bearing went in without any issues. 55 degrees out it the shop, so with a heat gun , I heated the hub up to a mere 120 deg and the bearing homed out with two blows from the driver. ( still would not want to do this out on the road ) Todays task is to get the front down on rubber and other than a good clean and wax routine , this old bike is road ready...

Still have no ideal on tires yet. Figure it will be the end of Feb. Going to wait until its back ready to almost ride. But rear tire will for sure go on before finishing up the drive shalft. :-D Can't see putting the rear wheel back on. To only pull it off before putting everything back together.

Did you use a shop local for the rebuild? We have a few rebuild shops within 30 minutes or so. Even though I'm in the middle of nowhere.

Hello Loren, A while back Tony D had his alternator apart for some PM. Having a bit more mile's on mine I pulled it and opened it up to find the brush's still in the window of service. Rather than wait for parts it went back together and is working fine. Not much there to go wrong other than worn brush's . And like you last week, I rode on Sat and Sun, Sunday was the best of the two days and was warm enough to wear a half helmet. Been wanting to just listen to the bike rolling down the road. So with last weekend , all of the old fuel is run out and filled with new. Only thing left to do is install the 3 AMP fuse for the radio.
PS we are booked and paid up for the Rally......

Hey Steve, Are you still doing the rides with the Retreads ? You guys really don't mind the cold
It won't be long before , I ride every day. We will have to meet up for a ride one day... A day that is over 45 deg that is.....
