Gas milage

Post by Danh »

Last fall I had the new ecu installed and today got my first extended ride in.
36.5 mpg calculated, 38.5 on the meter.
Needless to say I am disappointed with that for gas milage.

Dan, I ran 10 tanks of fuel through my bike recently and my lowest MPG was 32 and my highest was 45. I calculated the average at 39 MPG and my meter read 38.9 after running those 10 tanks of fuel.

I am pretty happy with that considering my KLR 650 averages 45 MPG, My Ninja 650 50 MPG, and my Mean Streak 42 MPG.

What kind of mileage were you expecting out of a 1700cc fully faired, 900+ lb motorcycle?

I just wish it had one more gallon so I could go 200 miles before looking for fuel.

Was it a calm day, flat roads, and 55 MPH riding?

I would be disappointed also, but this seems the norm for a heavy cruiser-style bike. The big V-twins just don't have the efficiency of the smaller, in-line 4s. And I don't think they have the aerodynamics of the sport touring bikes which hurts a lot at higher speeds.

Are you using ethanol poisoned gasoline? That hurts a lot also. My 1200LT has lost 3 MPG since the poison was added to the local gas.

Keep track of at least several tanks of fuel. When I first got the new ECU it appeared that my mileage had dropped some but now with over 7000 miles on the new ECU it looks like it is back close to the same. Maybe 1 mpg less. Of course with the cost of fuel increasing I am finding myself mixing 93 and 89 octane fuel if I add fuel before running it down to almost empty. If almost empty I put in 93.

I recently found one station near work that has no ethanol so I am going to try and buy several tanks of fuel there and see if that changes my findings.

I also lost my gas milage when they I installed the new reprogramed ecu. I went down to about 35-36 about the same as alot of the 2009s were getting new. The shop had a new ecu on hand for a new Voyager still in the crate I put in the new ecu and I got my gas milage back. I get about 39-40 in town and 42-44 out of town at about 55-60 mph. I can not say that I did not get any if not much better than that on my 1200. But one thing that I will add is if you get on the thottle on the 1700 which is very enjoyable and I seam to do that more on the 1700 than I did on the 1200 I might add you are going to suck up more dinosaur remains.

I made an appointment yesterday to get my ECU swapped out. I have 34000 km (21000) miles on my 2009 Voyager . My wife and I have been on two long trips the latest being too Rapid City SD and area. This trip along with the other one, averaged 42.2 (mpg Can) at the pumps. Speeds were up to 120km (74mph) with cruise on. Both trips were each just over 3100 km (1900 miles) My Bike has never stalled other than once near Mt Rushmore it idled down to 500 rpm I quickly caught it before it stalled I suspect the difference in altitude may have caused this. Any ways if I don,t change it the dealer will do it anyways as Kawi has deemed it as a safety issue.

There seems to be a difference between the reprogrammed ones and the new ones. I got a jump start on the recall so I got a new ECU instead of a reprogrammed one last fall. Makes you wonder if there is something other than software that is different.

Yes. Different part number. Below is a post I made back in November.

Unfortunately, none with a hundred miles of where I live. I've had to resort to paying more than $5/gallon for avgas just to avoid ruining my chain saw and lawn mowers.

I just put the 4" shorter Dark Tint shield from Rifle. With the gel seat and the sheepskin on the bike I can see over the windshield the ground in front of me 30 feet away. The wind just hits the top of my helmet. Hopefully enough to put some air into the vents. I really like it. Now with 3 shields to swap between I should be covered for anything.

Now to practice pulling the trunk for local riding so I won't be wishing for a Vaquero.

I don't hate you. Just jealous! :gig:

You will have to provide some insight on the differences and similarities of the way the two bikes ride and handle.
