Another newbie noise question 92 Voyager Xii
So the weather has turned I've had my new (old 92) voyager out and am hearing a little howl in the back end. At first I thought it was road noise, but I only hear it when I am accelerating or under load. I changed the rear end fluid this spring, and checked it again and it is still a little below the threads.
Do these bikes have some noise from the shaft drive or is there something I need to check into? If I need to look into something any thoughts on where to start?
Thanks from MN!

Re: Another newbie noise question 92 Voyager Xii
The final drives have square cut gears and some Voyagers howl worse than others. if it's not too bad the solution is to turn the radio up. A few have been so bad that the solution was to replace the final drive with one that has been tested (used) and is known to be quiet. I think that some have re-shimmed the gears but that is way beyond my mechanical ability.

by "howl" do you mean it sounds a little like George Jetson's space car? That's what mine sounds like on the highway.

I to have a 92 Voyager XII and had the same noise that you're talking about. I changed the fluid I also added some Motorkote to the oil. Now I've been using this product for years now and it works great and the noise is not as bad. You can also use this in the engine with no problems with the wet clutch. They also have a fuel product (Black 16 oz bottle) that works great and you only need 1 oz per 10 gallons compared to 1 oz of seafoam per gallon.
You can find Motorkote at Walmart but the fuel additive you'll need to order from their web site. I've also used this in my car, truck, lawn equipment & tools and guns. Any place or thing that you need lubed this stuff works, check it out.

Another thing to take a look at is the rear axle bolt, mine was waaay too tight, had to use a 6ft breaker bar to loosen. It helped with the noise, but finally ended up buying another final drive, absolutely quiet now.
This is my 3rd Voyager had an '89 then '98 and now '02, the last one was the only one with the noisy rear, it was so bad ear plugs did not help much.
By the way, never found any of the gear oils or synthetics helped the noise much.

My '90 was so bad when I got it in '02 with 49,000 miles on it, that I couldn't ride it at 50mph without a helmet on because the whine was so bad.

In the XII "Tech Center" section (accessible from the AVA homepage) are instructions for adjusting the Balancer Gear Backlash, which may (or may not) reduce the gear noise.

Guess I'll have to pick up a final drive on flea bay....pretty bad howl, but only between 65-70mph....have tried the special lube, the axel nut torque, the backlash but the only thing that has worked is to drive 64 or less or 71 or over...
