Adjusting the cam chain...?

OK, I crossed the 5.5K mark on my '00 engine and figure I better check on the cam chain, but...I'm not familiar with it!?
I'm used to my KLR 650, it's cam chain adjuster is "spring loaded", it "self adjusts", so I never have to check it. So, I look over my manual and it tells me how to remove or install the adjuster, but not how to "check" it, or tighten it?
So, can you "veterans" tell me how to adjust/tighten the cam chain?
You know...the valves are soon to come...

Yep, more or less, just change oil and filter and ride these horses , that's one of the best things about them.
