just from being an old CB'er, the first thing I would check is tranmitter output. I used to use a dummy load, a device you screw into the antenna connector in place of the antenna. Some would light up. That tells you it is transmitting. An SWR meter can also be used but make sure it has a dummy load on it also, if not the transmitter can be damaged. If the unit is transmitting then the problem is the antenna connector, the cable, or the antenna itself. Use a circuit testor to make sure the center conductor of the cable is NOT grounded to the outside of the cable. If it is your cable or antenna needs to be replaced.

FYI, if you get hold of an SWR meter, the CB should be putting out 3.5 to 5 watts. Later CB's were allowed to transmit the whole 5 watt rating.

Check with Pete (suzib6sw) for assistance. He'll have an idea. Worst case scenario would be something like the transmit finals being out.

If it is throwing a signal, but no audio, it might be as simple as swapping out the microphone. Pete can steer you in the right direction. Let us know what you figure out.

Have located a swr meter but can't hook up as of yet because there is no connector at bike antenna base. But it has a field strength test on it with the test units own antenna. This test I guess is showing power going out to air waves for as much as I understand about it. Have found a wire harness connector in passenger control bag that was unconnected. Have not been able to try unit since because of the much needed rain here, but hoping on a long shot that might have been it. If anyone understands how to use this tester for my problem I'll be more than happy to listen. Because I don't know beans about how to use it. If I am close to bike and key talk up on cb it pegs meters field strength meter so I'm supposing there is signal output? The instructions with the meter look like the were written by a Physicist and I'm not to that level yet! lol

Hmm.. if you can hear yourself in the headset from the mic, then the Y cord is working.. Its possible the signal from the radio to the CB is the issue and I have seen broken wires in the multi pin plugs that connect the CB to the radio.. (The cable from the radio with a brown collar on it).
Before you take anything apart, also try the headset in the passenger socket.. They run in parallel..

Cheers..

Thanks Pete, I do here myself in headset and my wife can here me also. Hoping tomorrow night I can test it with the Harley to see if unconnected wires in passenger bag was the culprit.

You better be sure there's an antenna(resonant at 11 meters) or a "50 OHM dummy load" on the output of that CB, hate to fry the finals because of no antenna?
That's the first thing I'd be checking.

Hmm.. thre isnt anything in the passenger bag that will cause no audio from the CB.. They are only there for the hand controls and are paralelled up with the handlebar ones..
I would be looking at the brown collared cable from the back of the radio to the CB initially, behind the headlight. Pull the plug and socket apart and re-connect and wiggle while talking .. All assuming you have the antenna connected.. The original voyager one has a black coil half way up on the left side of the bike..

the Final in the rig is fairly well protected.. I have had only one where it has blown but that was due to a short in the antenna wire. Clarion made a pretty bullet proof rig here..

The test was a success. Cb worked okay, we are not sure what fixed it, but it made my day!

Thanks all for the help and suggestions.

Pete, I have a question for you. What is the Auto Mute control for on the radio left side with the volume switch?
My book says-- Auto Mute (optional)

IIRC, the auto mute will turn the volume down on the radio or cb when the intercom is in use. I could be wrong. If I am, someone else will correct me.

That mutes the 'background' music when you talk. Turning the knob increases and decreases the level where it mutes.
