Radio Removal with pics and detailed PDF

Post by suzib6sw »

While I had the plastics off for a Coolant leak, I thought about taking the radio out and doing the various mods to the radio in the bike and not on the bench ;-)

To remove the Radio I suggest you take off the fairing totally along with the windshield etc..

Unbolt the headlight and unplug the bulb but leave the cable in place that adjusts the hight.
Trace all the wires that plug into the Radio and mark and unplug as necessary
Remove the speaker grills with an allen key and remove and unplug the speakers.
Unscrew the two large black bolts under the front of the radio.
Move to the front of the bike and look up towards the top of the plastic that houses the clocks. There are two screws there, one either side.
Look at either side of the radio and you will see a rubber mounted bracket. This may already be broken due to old age.
Remove the screws that hold it to the radio.
If your Radio still has it, remove the bezel around the outside of the radio. This is often missing because it falls off.
Now this is where others may have a better way of doing it, but I removed the cowling around the clocks by lifting the back of the cowling at the back, top and lifting the mounting tabs over the frame work where they were bolted on.
The whole cowling will now tilt forward. Just be carefull as it all feels like it will break while you are doing this.
Undo the 4 (10mm) nuts holding the clocks on and lift them out of the way.. You Dont need to unplug them. .Make a note there is a rubbber strip at the top of the clocks.. The wider part its on the clock faces.
now there are two large 13mm nuts holding the clock frame in place and you should be able to maneuver the radio out of its normal position.
Look a the top of the radio.. There are two screws holding it in place behind the front panel.. There are another two at the bottom of the radio in the same location.
You should now be able to slide the radio out of the framework together with the large rubber gasket will also be quite delicate due to age..

If Anyone has a better removal process, then let us in on the secret.

Pete

Pete,
You might want to upload these pictures directly from your computer instead of using tinypic in this forum. Tinypic may vanish after a while, while if you upload directly from your computer to this post (you can now do that in any of the tech forums), it will stay there. See the instructions in the "How to Post Photos in this forum".

Someone told me last weekend that he could take the crankshaft out of the bike faster than he could take the radio out. :gig:

Folks.. I had to remove the 94's Radio today.. I replaced the speakers as I had blown the replacement speaker on the left.
I chose some Pioneer speakers sold at Advance Auto parts TS-G1043R as they had a 20% off this week end.
Normally $50 the pair.. cost me $40 the pair. These speakers are really good.. AS efficient as the originals so no volume loss.. Bass is better (as much as it can be within the restrictions of the resonance of the fairing) Top end is clearer because of the tweeter. They have an IMPP cone (injection molded polypropylene (yes I had to look it up)) which should stand up to some adverse conditions though I would recommend that you dont "Wash" them.

Anyway we took pictures as we removed and put them in a PDF. Hope its comprehensive enough..

Slight change for the better folks with thanks to David Slike..

Instead of taking the clocks and shroud off, just above the radio itself, there are two smaller bolts.. Remove those and the Radio slides out on its own sub chassis.

Thanks David..

From reading the above postings, I'm guessing I got lucky. I removed the two side mounts, disconnected all the plugs and the radio slid right out by itself. Now trying to decide where to install the 150w amp and the 15" sub woofer for a little boom!! :hmm: LMAO!
Is the 1986 that different?

Hi Hip... yeah.. Now I have done the job several times, it so much easier that trying to remove that cowl.. The biggest issue are the conditions of the main seal around the radio and those side shocks..
the Shocks are still available, the seal isnt by itself..
However, I do have some totally new front fascia plates complete with those seals glued in from the factory..

Best time to get the Plastics off and radio out.. 20 mins... :hot: Carl did it in 16 :bowdn:

15" Sub and 150W amp.., the question is, how to strap the generator to the trunk rack to power it ;-)

Cheers...
